Adelaide, Sept.16 (ANI): Seven time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has indicated that he may make a comeback race next year in Australia.

The 37-year-old cycling champion has reportedly accepted an invitation from organizers of the Tour Down Under, who have been trying for years to attract Armstrong to the race, but cost and scheduling issues have always stopped them.

Now, according to news.com.au, Armstrong has said that he wants to race in several countries, including Australia.

The January 20-25 Tour Down Under achieved ProTour status this year and for several years has been the first major event on the international road race calendar.Armstrong nearly died from cancer in 1996 and his main motivation for returning to competition is to highlight awareness of the disease.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation and its Livestrong brand have raised more than 250 million dollars to support cancer sufferers and research into the disease.

Tour Down Under race director Mike Turtur said last week it would be sensational for the event if it could entice Armstrong.

But there is very little detail yet in Armstrong's comeback - he does not even have a team, let alone a 2009 race schedule. (ANI)
