New York, July 20 (ANI): They say beauty is skin-deep, but not if you are a corporate employee - in fact, you could be earning less than your co-workers just because they are more attractive.
"Handsome men earn, on average, 5 percent more than their less-attractive counterparts," The New York Daily News quoted Newsweek mag as saying.
On the other hand, attractive women make 4 percent more.
That roughly translates into 250,000 dollars more than a comparable, yet unattractive, employee.
The magazine claims that we are 'hard-wired' to give beauty higher preference - even cuter babies have it better than their not-so-cute counterparts!
Being mediocre-looking has other, far worse implications, according to the report. The less good-looking you are in America, the more likely you are to be poor, receive a lower salary and worse performance reviews at work and get a longer prison sentences if you land in jail.
Unattractive people are also statistically less likely to be married.
And this bias may be even more pronounced in a recession-hit country.
Newsweek found that more than half of the respondents recommended that prospective employees devote as much time and money on 'making sure they look attractive' as on polishing their resumes.
"This is the new reality of the job market," one New York recruiter told Newsweek.
"It's better to be average and good-looking than brilliant and unattractive." (ANI)
