Uttarakhand police thrash BJP MLA

Dehradun, Mon, 12 Jul 2010 ANI

Dehradun, July 12 (ANI): The Uttarakhand police allegedly beat up a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, Rajkumar, following an argument over the stopping of his vehicle at a circle in Dehradun.

The incident took place on Sunday, when Rajkumar's vehicle was stopped by the police in view of a traffic snarl in the area, which later led to a heated argument between police personnel and Rajkumar.

After the argument, police personnel dragged the MLA out of the vehicle and began beating him up. He was later brought to the Prem Nagar police station.

"We stopped the vehicle for a minute at the circle. In the meantime, a police constable came and misbehaved with my driver. I said: We are going, and in the meantime, he took the car keys and started beating him up," said MLA Rajkumar. "When I got down from the car, again they beat me up. My Personal Assistant (PA) was sitting at the back. He told them about me being an MLA," he added.

Tension prevailed in the area later, as BJP party workers and supporters gathered at the police station and vandalised furniture and destroyed files.

Ten police officials, including a sub-inspector, have since been suspended with immediate effect.

"As I have been told, argument took place when they were told to move the vehicle. Some police officials have misbehaved with the MLA. This is a serious matter and we are taking it seriously," said Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhinav Kumar.

"Police officials who are involved have been suspended immediately by me. As per the complaint given by the MLA, a case has been registered and investigation is on," he added.
