Dec 01: Bollywood and controversy have had a long-term relationship. An effortless and economical way to make a movie hit is to create controversy around it.
Sometimes this funda has been applied by the production unit in a calculated strategic manner. And sometimes-other controversies create itself that eventually goes in favour of the movie.
This time dancing diva Madhuri Dixit's comeback movie Aaja Nachle has hit a blockade in Uttar Pradesh.
Finding some words used in the title track of the movie offensive to Dalits, the Mayawati government has banned the film in the entire state. Not just that, Mayawati also wrote to the Prime Minister saying the film should be banned all over the country.
Various ways have been applying by Bollywood for the promotion of the movie at different span of time.
Earlier only movie-posters and banners were the only ways for the promotion of the movie especially in the small towns. Later, loudspeakers took the role of hitting the mind of the public.
Presently the producers started a novel way of the promotion through the leading stars of the movie participating in the reality shows screened on television. Also, news channels are not leg behind. They invite the leading actor or director in the prime hour of the news chatting with him on the particular movie and thus support in its promotion.
But as I said earlier that controversy is the best way for the successful promotion of the movie helps ultimately in making it “a hit”. But it not happens always. But whenever happens undoubtedly enhances the business of the movie.
Controversial movie "Jo Bole So Nihal" which had been condemned by Sikh religious leaders as denigrating their faith led to many explosions all over the world.
Deepa Mehta directed “Fire” because of its lesbian content enraged the Hindu zealots. Sita (Nandita Das) and Radha (Shabana Azmi) the two leading actress in this movie played the role of rejected wives. These two married sisters-in-law find the comfort and love that was missing in their marriages with each other, and soon indulged in a love affair.
The church’s objection to the film was that it portrayed the Catholic Church in a negative light and sharpens the denominational divide.
