J and K Election Commission says state ready for polls

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Jammu, Sept 14 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission officials today said that the state was ready to hold the next Assembly polls, as work was going on in full swing.

Earlier, Central Election Commission (CEC) officials held a meeting with political parties in the state on September 8 to decide the poll dates for Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials said that they would be all ready to hold the polls in a few days.

"The election department is working ahead of schedule. All the updating and other work is on a fast track. The progress is good on the work. In a matter of few days, we will be all set to face the elections. In all, we are ready for the polls," said JS Manhas, a deputy electoral officer in Jammu.

Residents said they preferred elections and a fresh Assembly to New Delhi's direct rule.

"Governor rule is not all that beneficial for the people and the state. It is a temporary relief for the people whenever a government runs into trouble, but it is the politicians that we elect who will be able to bail us out in our troubles," said Rajesh Kesri, a resident. (ANI)
