Singur drift widens, no accord on land allotment

As the talks between Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and West Bengal government failed to reach any agreement over the Singur land issue of TATA Nano project, the former has threatened to stir her agitation and even called for a march on September 16.

She has accused the government and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for retreating from the earlier agreement and taking arbitrary decision without consulting her party.

The West Bengal government on Friday offered a maxium of 70 acres of land from the present allotted land to Tata. But Mamta had outrightly rejected the offer and demanded for 300 acres of land from inside the Nano project site.

Earlier as per the talks between Buddhadeb and Mamta last Sunday, a committee was formed to look for land available in the Tata Motors project area in Singur for farmers who have not been compensated.

However, the Left Front chairman Biman Bose had told reporters that the government couldn't allot more than 70 acres of land from inside the project area.

Looking at the recent development, West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Saturday called for a spirit of accommodation to break deadlock over Singur issue.

“Through the Singur discussions on September 5, 6 and 7, I saw earnest participants showing a rare spirit of accommodation. That spirit needs to be operationalised," a Raj Bhavan release said.

“I believe, a solution can still be found in a manner that accords with the law, safeguards the interests of farmers and help in establishing the farm-factory balance," release added.

Tata Motors is facing opposition in Singur from where it is scheduled to roll out world's cheapest Nano car.

Trouble began after the West Bengal government acquired 1000 acres of farmland for the car manufacturing plant last year. The government offered compensation, which some farmers rejected and the Trinamool Congress has been demanding that at least 300 acres be returned to farmers.
