'Beleaguered' Capello blames 'extreme tiredness' for England's World Cup rout

London, Tue, 29 Jun 2010 ANI

London, Jun 29 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has said that he wants to stay on as England manager after the nation's worst ever World Cup defeat, but admitted the team was "really tired".

"All the players were not so good like that I know (they can be). Because they played not so fast, not so quick," he told reporters in Rustenburg, South Africa.

Capello said the FA had told him they needed two weeks to decide whether to keep him in the post, after England's 4-1 defeat at the hands of Germany.

"I said I can be, for the next season. But they have to decide," Sky News quoted the England boss, as saying.

Denying that he found his players difficult to work with during the tournament in South Africa, Capello described them as "really tired at this competition".

"All the coaches told me that the physical situation and the mental situation of the players was not like the players that we know," he said.

Fans are still bemoaning a blunder by match officials in Bloemfontein, who failed to spot a shot by England's Frank Lampard had bounced over the goal line.

Capello earlier insisted the game "would have been different" had the goal stood. (ANI)
