Sasikiran advances to second round of World Cup

Nov 27:   Saskiran is the lone Indian who moves into the second round of the Chess World Cup, as his other three compatriots fail to advance.

India ’s Krishnan Sasikiran turned out to be the lone hope for the country, as he became the only Indian to move into the second round of the World Cup, while his three compatriots were eliminated in first round tie-breakers here on Monday.

Grandmaster K. Sasikiran got the better off Bulgarian Grandmaster Sergei Zigalko 3.5-2.5 in a closely fought tie-breaker blitz game after drawing first two classical games with the opponent.

Both the players also drew their Rapid games the tie-breaker taking the clash into Blitz version, where Indian grandmaster won the first and drew second to move into the next round.

Sasikiran will now meet Russian Vadim Zvaginsev in thhe second round. The Russian made his place in the next round after beating India’s Abhijit Kunte in the tie-breaker.

However, Pentala Harikrishna of India had an upset loss from the hands of China's Zhao Jun. Hari, who rated more than 110 Elo points higher than Zhao, was eliminated in the tie-breaker. Zhao will now fight it out with Livier Dieter Nisipeanu.

GM G. N. Gopal put up a brave fight before losing to former world champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Gopal, who had drawn both his classical games against his fancied opponent, also managed to hold his own in the rapid games. Kasimdzhanov at last succeeded in the blitz games by a 1.5-0.5 margin.

G Kasimdzhanov will clash with Kiril Georgiev in the second round. Among notable first round upsets, Vladimir Belov eliminated his compatriot former world champion, Alexander Khalifman and British Grandmaster Nigel Short was shown the door by young 19-year-old German GM David Baramidze.

Bangladesh ’s Hosain Enamul scored an upset victory over Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine.

Earlier, India’s Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Abhijit Kunte had joined the list of first-round losers. Ganguly lost the opening classical game with black pieces against the Netherlands’ Sergei Tiviakov and drew the next to lose 0.5-1.5 on Sunday. Abhijit Kunte lost the rapid match 0.5-1.5 to Russian GM Vadim Zvjaginsev.

First round results(Indians): Rustam Kasimdzhanov (Uzb) bt G. N. Gopal 4-2, Vadim Zvjaginsev (Rus) bt Abhijit Kunte 2.5-1.5, Zhao Jun (Chn) bt P. Hari Krishna 2.5-1.5, K. Sasikiran bt Sergei Zhigalko (Blr) 3.5-2.5 and Sergie Tikiakov (Ned) bt Surya Shekhar Ganguly 1.5-0.5.
