Suspected Maoists kill CPI (M) worker near Jhargam in West Medinipur

West Medinipur (West Bengal), June 6 (ANI): Suspected Maoists killed a worker of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and ransacked the houses of several other party workers at Baramdihi near Jhargram in West Medinipur district of West Bengal on Saturday night.

The slain party worker was identified as Nirmal Singh. He was shot dead by suspected Maoists, numbering in hundreds.

The dead body was recovered from Kumarmohan village in the neighbouring Raipur area on Sunday morning (June 06).

" We know we will be killed one day but we are worried for our children," said Pushpa Guccha, a CPI-M worker in the area.

The Maoists and members of People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), a rebel organisation, also attacked the houses of several CPI-M workers in Jhargram district and threatened to capture their land and fields.

The ultras also left a note at the site claiming responsibility for the attack and they blamed the victims of their attack as police informers.

The Maoists, described by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the country's biggest internal security threat, started their armed struggle in Naxalbari town of West Bengal in 1967, giving them the name 'Naxalites'.

Maoists claim to be fighting against the prevailing political system and in cause of the poor and marginal farmers and landless labourers, and operate primarily from rural pockets in 20 of India's 28 states.

Over the past four decades, they have expanded their support among farmers by tapping into resentment at the government's pro-industry push. (ANI)
