Heat wave continues unabated in Amritsar

New Delhi, Sat, 17 Apr 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 17 (ANI): With temperature rising several degrees above the average, locals reel under the scorching heat wave condition in Amritsar.

With the mercury crossing the 40-degree mark, locals are having a tough time under the sizzling heat.

"We are facing a lot of problems. We cannot even step out of our houses until the sun sets," said Ashima Agarwal.

"The temperature is very high for the past two weeks. The maximum temperature nowadays, is 43 degree Celsius," said Gurminder Singh.

While the commoners prefer shady areas to escape the scorching sun and the hot puffs of air, the roadside vendors of fruits and juices are all smiles as they are doing brisk business.

"Its very hot in Amritsar. We did not expect that the temperature would be so high over here. You can see that even the birds are drinking water; even they are craving for water," said Raminder Singh, a visitor.

Until June when monsoon rains arrive, the months of May-June are usually the hottest in the country with the temperature going way beyond the 40-45 degrees Celsius mark at many places in northern and eastern India. (ANI)
