Tata Motors denies working at Singur
Tata Motors has decided not to commence the production work for Nano project at Singur despite the end of the stalemate over land allotment issue at Singur in West Bengal. Terming the consensus between the West Bengal Government and the Trinamool Congress Chief, Mamta Banerjee as 'vague', the Tata Motors has said there will be no Nano production from Singur.
In a press statement released on Monday, Tata Motors has said the deal on the Singur issue between the Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and TMC chief Mamta Banerjee lacks clarity. So, the company has decided not to start the construction work. Furthermore, Tata was not consulted before reaching the final agreement, the statement said.
The company said it would review its stated position only if the viability of the project is not impinged. The integral nature of mother plant and ancillary units must be maintained. Also, 997-acre Nano project size was not discussed a single time in the last two hours of talks between the government and the protesters, the statement said.
Tata Motors statement came a day after Mamta Banerjee suspended her 15-day indefinite strike protesting outside the 'Nano plant' at Singur on Sunday night after an agreement was concluded with the state government in mediation by the state Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi.
As per the 'compromise formula' the Governor had announced that a four-member committee would be appointed to workout best ways in returning the land to farmers who had not accepted compensation in return of land acquired from them. As per the accord, those farmers would be given land within the Nano plant site in Singur and outside it.
The committee will have to identify the land within a week and till then the government has suspended construction work in all subsidiary units.
Tata Motors, which is still assessing the 'compromise formula' between the West Bengal Government and the TMC chief Mamta Banerjee, said that the company would take the final decision after assessing the future of the Singur Project and the local circumstances.
Sources, however, said Sunday's developments apparently lack a definite solution to the stalemate.
