Abdullah questions Kashmir's accession to India

New Delhi, Thu, 22 Nov 2007 NI Wire

The statement of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference leader over accession of the state to India in lieu of human rights violence brought wide scale protest; his assertion on security forces can also be seen as an attempt to discolour the credibility of Army in the state.

Controversies are part and partial of Farooq Abdullah’s political life. He is known for his advocacy of Kashmir’s autonomy and contradicting himself by delivering different statements in Delhi and Kashmir.

This National Conference leader has again engrossed all the attention by his remark on Kashmir’s accession.

He stirred unrest after his reaction on the alleged encounter saying: “People like Farooq Abdullah will also have to start thinking twice about it whether we right, is our accession to the nation - done by my father or by Maharaja Hari Singh - absolutely straight and right. Because what these Army people are doing is trying to harm us who stand with the nation."

Earlier he has also raised objection on singing Vande Mataram. This again displeased BJP supporters who came out on the streets of Jammu and Kashmir demanding Abdullah’s arrest.

Ashok Khajuria BJP President, Jammu and Kashmir said, "Those who indulge in anti-national talk should be tried under the law and sent to jail.”

"The government cannot afford to give unbridled freedom to anyone to express views which have potential of fomenting anti-India sentiments and creating dissension in the civil society," he added further.

Controversies characterised his temperament who has also openly asked to formalise LOC as international border. His term as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir was also full of ups and down.

Lately his political carrier was marred because of Kashmir Sex Scandal which involved politicians, businessman and civil servants closed to him.

Yet who know that Abdullah might be having something in mind that may be such controversies will lend him back the power of Kashmir.

The turns, twists and somersaults of Kashmiri politicians cause much amusement. On one hand, we have a fractured "freedom struggle' whose Pakistani-supported agenda involves only separation from and eternal hostility to India. No other plan of what to do AFTER independence is thought of, or even if independence is viable, given that Pakistan is now locked in a struggle for its very existence. On the other hand, we have seemingly India-centric politicians who, to avoid being eliminated by the "freedom fighters" occasionally try to out-do them by confusing statements.
