Srinagar, Wed, 31 Mar 2010 ANI

Srinagar, Mar. 31 (ANI): The historical Lal Chowk or the red square of Srinagar is getting a facelift after two decades of turmoil.

While digging for drainages has already finished, the developmental works such as repairing footpaths, damaged buildings etc. has started.

As a goodwill gesture, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has granted two crore rupees for the facelift of the Chowk.

"Lal Chowk is a historical place. Honourable Chief Minister had allocated Rupees two crore for the beautification of Lal Chowk. Work on improvement on road network, landscaping, footpaths and shabby light system has already started," said Meraj-u-Din Kakroo, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar.

"We want Srinagar to be a beautiful place, so that it can become place of attraction, once again," he added.

Locals are excited, as the beautification will help restore the historical grandeur of the city.

"Because of turmoil, we were left behind while the world progressed. Now we should make for the loss, quickly. There should be no further delays in the work, so that tourists can enjoy all areas including the internal part of Srinagar," said Ghulam Haider, a local resident.

Located in the heart of Srinagar, the Lal Chowk is the nerve centre of political and business activities. (ANI)
