BJP will waive off farmers' debt, renegotiate nuke deal if voted to power

Ghaziabad/Jaipur, Sept 8 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh has said his party would waive off farmers' debt if voted to power.

Singh made this statement while addressing a public rally in Ghaziabad on Sunday.

"I want to assure you if you make Lal Krishna Advani as Prime Minister, we will waive off your debts," said Singh.

General elections are due in 2009 and the BJP is not leaving any stone unturned to return back to power under the leadership of L K Advani, who is the Prime Ministerial candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Alliance.

Meanwhile, another senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj has attacked Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh alleging for his own prestige, he had put India's sovereignty at stake on the nuke issue, while addressing a press conference in Jaipur.

Expressing apprehensions over the deal, she said the BJP would renegotiate the pact if it was voted to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

On the NSG waiver at Vienna, Swaraj said though the 16-year embargo against India was lifted, the sovereignty of the country had been undermined.

Rubbishing UPA's claim that the deal was historic, she recalled that Moghul emperor Jehangir had permitted the East India Company for trading and in the process India became a slave for over 250 years.

The BJP leader said after the leak of the US official correspondence on the agreement, it became clear that if India opted for nuclear tests the deal would be terminated.

The BJP, she said, would oppose the deal and would hold rallies and meetings in this regard across the country.

To a question, Swaraj said there was a difference between the BJP and Left's opposition to the deal. "The reasons and intentions of both parties are different," she said.

When asked why the BJP was opposing the deal, she said it was against India opening up its 35 reactors for inspection before the IAEA, adding that the BJP wanted only one reactor to be under the purview of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection.

The NSG waiver for India at Vienna on Saturday came under severe flak from BJP and Left parties alleging that it would push the country into nuclear non-proliferation trap.

"Initially it appears that India has neither got a clean nor an unconditional waiver," The Communist Party of India (Marxist) said adding that it looked as if India has de-facto accepted the NPT.

"If this is the case, it is yet another surrender," said CPI (M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury, whose party has remained in the vanguard of the opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Left parties alleged none of the nine assurances given by the Prime Minister has been met and demanded immediate convening of the Parliament session to debate the fate of the assurances.

In response, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Singhvi had a dig at the Left parties and the opposition, dubbing them as "bad losers" and wanting them to introspect.

In similar lines, the Samajwadi Party termed the waiver as a great victory for India and said it would help the country in its development.

"India needs development and not nuclear bombs," SP General Secretary Amar Singh said, criticising the opposition parties for "beating around the bush". (ANI)
