Congress declares list of candidates for 1st phase of Gujarat poll

Nov 21:   As Thursday is the last day of filing nomination paper for the first phase of Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress party announced the list of its candidates for 87 seats and also worked out an alliance with the NCP in nine constituencies.

The first phase of Gujarat assembly poll is scheduled to take place on December 11 and ahead of the election, Congress eliminating all differences among party members regarding sharing seats agreed to left nine seats with its UPA coalition partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in total including three for the first phase.

The party has also given tickets to 27 seating MLAs though earlier indication was that there may be some of them possibly left out. Also some of the dissidents BJP leaders have got congress tickets for constituencies like Abdasa, Mundra, Amreli, Surat North and Dhari constituencies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the guidance of state Chief Minister Narendra Modi earlier on Sunday night had announced list of 75 candidates including as many as 20 new entrants and eliminating candidates attacked under anti-incumbency factor. For phase two, the party has decided to pronounce names of candidates for 95 seats on November 23. The poll for the second phase would be held on Dec 16.

The Bahujan Samaj Party on the other hand will contest all 182 seats on its own without any alliance with congress and have already list-out names of 82 candidates for the part of first phase. However, the list for the second phase would be announced by the end of the month, as said by party spokes person.

BSP supremo Mayawati, after regaining power in Uttar Pradesh with a massive victory is hopeful for her party to do well in the forthcoming assembly poll. The party had also lately organised a massive rally in Vadodara district where she emphasized on her newly formed social-engineering agenda advocating reservation for the economically poor in the upper castes.

The first phase polling would be held in Surendranagar, Kutch, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbander, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavanagar, Bharuch, Narmada, Navsari, Surat, Dangs and Valsad districts on December 11.
