DUSU polls: ABVP bags President, NSUI wins others
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), on Saturday, claimed the top post of President while National Students Union of India (NSUI) won the other three in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election.
BJP affiliated ABVP’s president candidate Nupur Sharma defeated Congress allied NSUI’s Sonia Sapra by 1, 639 votes. She will now chair the President post of DUSU.
However, NSUI rolling its dominance over Delhi University students’ body bagged the other three top posts of vice president, general secretary and the joint secretary.
NSUI’s Manohar Nagar elected for the post of vice president, Amit Chaudhary won the post of general secretary whereas Ashish Gehlot elected as the joint secretary.
Despite all the hullaballoo with extensive campaign only an estimated 35-40 per cent vote turnout was recorded on Friday. However, polls were conducted peacefully in all booths with a total of 80,000 voters turned up across 51 colleges.
Congress’ student wing, NSUI has been dominating the DUSU elections since the last five years. However, this time ABVP’s presidential candidate Nupur Sharma, who is a second year law student, had an edge over NSUI's Sonia Sapra who is a first year student of Bhagat Singh College.
Issues in this year's manifesto have remained almost same for both the leading student wings highlighting issues like AIDS awareness, female foeticide, sexual harassment in campus, promotion of sports, scholarship programmes, infrastructure etc.
However, despite the highhandedness of university authority, complaints and allegations of violations of code of conduct in DUSU elections have been reported. The vice-Chancellor in this regard has constituted a Committee of three distinguished professors to enquire into these and give its report at the earliest.
