Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Friday awarded a five-year sentence to Sanjeev Nanda, who was held guilty in the BMW hit-and-run case. He was convicted under culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Nanda, the prime accused and three others were found guilty on September 02 for running down seven people killing six of them including three police men in the high-profile January 10, 1999 BMW hit-and-run case.
The court also sentenced co-accused businessman Rajiv Gupta to 1-year imprisonment for destroying evidence while his two domestic helps Bhola Nath and Shyam Singh were sentenced for six months of committing the same offence under section 201 (destruction of evidence).
Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar while pronouncing the judgement said, “Sanjeev Nanda, I awarded you a five-year jail term and the nine months you have earlier spent in the jail would be deducted.
The Indian Penal Code section 304 (Part II) ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ holds a maximum imprisonment of up to 10 years. The public prosecutor Rajeev Mohan had demanded maximum punishment for the culprit.
