Shillong, Mar 5 (ANI): Bangladesh businessmen have taken Shillong by storm by showcasing a wide variety of goods at the 11th International Shillong Trade Fair in Meghalaya.

The trade fair, which began on February 26, has been organised by the Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam, with support from the Government of Meghalaya and the National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC).

Almost 25 companies from Bangladesh are taking part in the event, and products ranging from melamine, garments, food and plastic products, cosmetics, handloom works and handicrafts are on display in their pavilions.

"I think this fair has a big prospect in future. Our government is interested to build up strong trade relations between Bangladesh and Meghalaya, and with the northeastern region of India. So, I think this fair will usher a new horizon for both countries in the field of trade and commerce," said Mohammad Omar Farooqi, First Secretary (Commercial) Bangladesh Deputy High Commission.

Giving tough competition to Bangladesh are traders from Thailand. Visitors are thronging the Thai pavilion to catch a glimpse of the world-class products ranging from crystalware to artificial flowers and various other artefacts.

This year, the number of participations from the South-East Asian country has increased. The commercial counsellor of Royal Thai Embassy, Tharadol Thongruang, expressed happiness at the strengthening of ties between India and Thailand.

"This year the number of participants has increased from 17 companies to 27. That means that the response and relationship between Thai businesspersons and people from Meghalaya has become closer and they are happy to be together. The increase in number of participants from Thailand show that the relationship has also increased," said Thongruang.

Apart from Bangladesh and Thailand, other foreign countries participating in the fair include Egypt, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran and Nepal.

The fair will conclude on March 9. (ANI)
