Central rural development schemes realizing Mahatma Gandhi's dream in Assam

Guwahati, March 3 (ANI): The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) has played an important role in bringing smiles on thousands of faces.

The scheme has not just provided some economic security to people but also hope of a better future.

National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme has come as a blessing for the rural people.umoli Gogoi, a widow from the Titabor district in Assam is its beneficiary.

After her husbands' death, life was not easy as she was economically not secure.

However after she signed up for NREGS, the situation has changed and now she earns enough for herself and lives in a pucca house.

Under the scheme, she works on building roads.

During her free time she practices weaving, which adds to her income.

"I keep my kitchen fuel burning by weaving and farming. But life has changed the better after I was given a Job Card under NREGS by the Gaon Panchayat One and half-year back," said Kumoli Gogoi, a beneficiary.

"I am also saving some money in Post Office every month. I am really thankful to the authorities for enabling me to lead a better life through the Job Card," Gogoi added.

The NREGS has generated employment for millions.

Just like Kumoli, 12,000 other people have benefited in Titabor from the scheme.

The NREGS focuses on development and takes up projects like improving rural connectivity, drainage systems and irrigation facilities.

"Before we used to depend only on agriculture and faced many problems meeting our families requirements. After we got the Job Card from Govt. we have been leading a comfortable life," said Minuti Chutia another beneficiary.

"Through the money that we earn, we can send our children to school and also use it to meet the requirements of the family," she added.

"This land was very unproductive and the villagers depended on rice cultivation. With the help of the Panchayat we are digging an irrigation canal from Naga Foothills to Rajapahar Gaon," said Hara Kanta Gogoi.

"Through this canal, villagers in the region will be benefited to a great extent. Besides we are also handsomely paid for the work that we are doing. Through various schemes implemented in this area the socio-economic condition has improved," he added.

Along with NREGS other schemes like Indira Awas Yojana (IAY), Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY), Kalpataru, Indira Gandhi Old Age pension Scheme, National Family Benefit Scheme, Rural Sanitation and Mid-day meal have been started in Titabor district.

"I am from a very poor family. I have received a Housing grant from the Panchayat and the construction of my house is almost complete. Earlier we lived in a hut but now I am very happy as I am getting a free house made of iron, cement, bricks etc," said Kano Kachari, IAY beneficiary.

The Government has undertaken these projects to uplift the weaker sections of society especially in remote and far flung areas. By Vashipem Kamodang (ANI)
