Bahuguna against high-rise buildings in Goa

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Panjim, Sep 4 (ANI): Noted environmental Sundarlal Bahuguna today said thathe mega housing projects that are cropping up in Goa are threatening the ecology of the region.

Bahuguna who is well known for his famous 'Chipko Movement', the unique save trees campaign of embracing trees to save them from being cut, is now spearheading a campaign against building mega housing projects in Goa.

He said that people from across the globe come to enjoy the traditional way of living in the beach side huts. The building huge structures in place of the traditional small houses would be a set back to the region's flourishing tourism sector.

"Those people constructing big buildings for the tourists should understand that tourists want to enjoy life amidst the nature, they come here in search of peace, they don't want to live in huge buildings, they want to live in small huts," said Bahuguna.

Goa's pristine beaches and swaying palm groves attract nearly 400,000 tourists during the peak October-March season, and the state's languid lifestyle is seen as one of the major attractions for the tourists.

But off late, business establishments have started bringing about a change in Goa's skyline by building high-rise buildings. (ANI)
