Nov 16: Andhra is notorious for being a major source of illegal migrants to gulf countries. Every year thousands of people migrate illegally on tourist visa to work there by paying a huge amount to the mediators for providing visa to them. This is a practice not new to Andhra. But what is new is that since UAE started its drive to prevent illegal migrants to the country, Indian workers whose majority hails from Andhra are being deported back.

In June this year an amnesty scheme was launched by UAE government in which it gave arrangement for illegal foreign workers that either they get regularise themselves in a period of three months or they can return to their country without any penalty.

Due to the deportation to their country labourers have landed in immense financial crisis which is prompting them to end their lives as they find no way out to the pressure.

Following UAE’s drive around one-lakh workers were destined to return to their native places with disappointment on their faces and debt on their heads. Unable to solve their problems through any other measure they are committing suicide to get out of the problem.

Almost all the workers belong to low-income background and managed to go to gulf countries after taking loan from their relative brokers only now when returned they are unable to repay their loans and have been cordoned by the difficulties.

Worst feature is that the state government is neither coming to rescue them from the crisis nor recognising the gravity of the problem.

For the last three months almost 50 returnees have taken their lives. But chief minister of the state says that no such case has been reported so far.

Government keeps no record of the numbers migrating to gulf countries and coming back from there. According to an NGO around 20,000 workers are still there. This is to be mentioned that there are around 1.5 million Indian workers in gulf nations mostly in construction industry.
