BJP seeks explanation from Govt. over Shyam Saran's resignation
New Delhi, Feb.20 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday sought explanation from the Government on the reasons that led to the resignation of the Prime Minister's Special Envoy on Climate Change, Shyam Saran.
Saran decided to call he quits on Friday (February 19).
He was first appointed as the Special Envoy on the Indo-US nuclear deal and later on climate change.
His resignation has been accepted from March 14.
Speaking to media in New Delhi on Saturday, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad sought to know whether the resignation incident occurred because of Shyam Saran's differences with the Union Minister for Environment and Forest Jairam Ramesh?
"The BJP demands from the government as to why Mr Shyam Saran, the PM's envoy on Climate Change has resigned. Is it because of serious differences between the Minister for Environment Mr Jairam Ramesh and him? Is it a fact that he was opposed to the weakening of India's position on climate change as far as emission cut is concerned?," said Prasad.
Without naming Shiv Shankar Menon, Prasad questioned his appointment as National Security Advisor (NSA), as he was associated with the Sharm-el-Sheikh declaration between India and Pakistan, which evoked criticism in India.
"Why does any honest adviser of the government, who had the country's interests in mind, is not able to continue? Does this government promote only those advisors, who create shame at Sharm-el-Sheikh and make meek surrender as far as its own interest is concerned? The BJP certainly demands the government to explain," Prasad added.
Both Menon and Saran have retired as Foreign Secretaries. (ANI)
