Californian brewer wins right to sell 'Legal Weed' beer

London, Sept 3 (ANI): A small beer manufacturing firm in Weed, California has won the right to sell its beer under the name of 'Legal Weed'.

Weed is a small town of 3,000 people in North California and also refers to marijuana in slang language.

Owner of Mt. Shasta Brewing Co., Vaune Dillmann feared his firm may have to close after regulators ordered him to remove the motto "Try Legal Weed" from bottle tops, citing laws banning drugs references on alcoholic drinks.

However, after the case made headlines across the world and caught the attention of civil liberties campaigners, the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau agreed to accept the slogan.

"It's over. Weed fought the law, and Weed won," the Telegraph quoted Dillmann, as telling Los Angeles Times newspaper.

He was prepared to challenge the order in court.

The 61-year-old former policeman said that the fight had been "embarrassing and exhausting," however, since the case had made headlines, sales of beer produced more than doubled in the six months.

The national trade bureau said in a letter to Dillmann that it now accepted "Weed" was a brand, and not an allusion to illegal drugs.

"Based on the context of the entire label, we agree that the phrase in question refers to the brand name of the product and does not mislead consumers," the letter stated. (ANI)
