Police detain agitating protesters in Tamil Nadu

Vellore (Tamil Nadu), Sept 2 (ANI): Police in Tamil Nadu today detained over 200 people protesting against a local daily that published a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad.

 

Dinamalar, a leading daily in the state, published the cartoon on Tuesday, which had been earlier published by a newspaper in Denmark.

 

The cartoon angered the some people in Vellore district, who first stoned the office of the newspaper and later destroyed four state run buses.

 

"We were protesting against the cartoon of Prophet Mohammad published by the newspaper but suddenly police started beating us ruthlessly. In the clash, seven of our volunteers have been seriously injured," said Nizirudeen, a leader of protestors.

 

About 100 protesters were injured and three were admitted with serious injuries when police resorted to baton charge to disperse the protesters.

 

Police has reportedly filed a case against the newspaper and is investigating into the matter. (ANI)
