Nov 15: Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee received criticism from all sides for his statements he made on Tuesday defending the CPM cadre’s action in Nandigram in which he said that Bhoomi Uchched Pratirodh Committee, Trinamool Congress and the Maoists were creating violence with arms for some months and now they have been paid back in their own coin.

These statements were condemned not only by the opposition parties but also by his own left front partners. Even intellectuals came on roads to register their silent protest against Buddhadeb government’s mishandling of Nandigram.

On Wednesday the chief minister tried to save his face saying, “I am not above my party and I cannot disown my allegiance to my party. I am a CPI (M) man too. But since I took oath of office of CM, I have to function as CM”.

In Kolkata around 50,000 thousand people were out to join a silent protest rally led by the artists, intellectuals and film actors and others in condemnation of the violence wrought in Nandigram.

Various famous personalities such as Aparna Sen, Ritu parno Ghosh, Mahashweta Devi, Shankho Ghosh, Soumendo Roy and Suvaprasanna and Jogen Chowdhry led the rally. Mrinal Sen who is considered pro-Bhuddhadeb also joined the protest rally.

The rally was addressed by Medha Patekar. In her address she urged the people to march to Nandigram raising the slogan, “Amaar Naam Tomaar Naam Nandigram, Nandigram”.

Hitherto CM of West Bengal has announced that government will provide Rupees 1 crore from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of the families whose houses have been burnt and damaged for their return to their homes. Administration will help them rehabilitate.
