India monitoring situation in Pakistan closely, says Krishna

New Delhi, Mon, 25 Jan 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 25 (ANI): External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Monday said India is keeping a close watch on Pakistan and monitoring the situation in that country.

Krishna's remarks were in response to reports that claimed Pakistan was building tunnels in the Sargodha district of Punjab.

"We are closely monitoring whatever has been happening in Pakistan and both our Defence Ministry as well as the External Affairs (Foreign) ministry will certainly work together to analyse what it means by way of implication to India," said Krishna.

Earlier, intelligence agencies had informed the Central Government of Pakistan building tunnels in areas bordering India.

India suspects Pakistan could use the tunnels to store nuclear weapons and missiles.

Reports that the Chinese will visit Sargodha and train Pakistanis in the handling of weapons and missiles is another cause of worry for New Delhi.

"We are happy that democracy will ultimately triumph. Tomorrow is a very big day for the people of Sri Lanka and they will be given a chance to elect a government of its choice and whomsoever the Sri Lankan people will elect, India certainly will look forward to working with the leaders," said Krishna.

On the Presidential polls in Sri Lanka, Krishna said, "India is happy that it is democracy that ultimately triumphed in Sri Lanka." (ANI)
