AN Roy selected new Maharashtra police chief

Mumbai, Fri, 22 Jan 2010 ANI

Mumbai, Jan 22 (ANI): The Maharashtra Government on Friday appointed AN Roy, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra (Anti-Corruption Bureau) as the new State police chief.

SS Virk had retired as Maharashtra DGP on October 31 last year, but the state was yet to appoint a DGP as the Congress and the NCP coalition government in Maharashtra was unable to decide upon Virk's successor.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had on November 1 last year given Roy the additional charge as the state police chief before the Congress-NCP alliance was sworn in for a fresh term.

Roy's appointment to the top post was expected to be formalized after the Congress-NCP government returned to power for a third time in the state, as he was the senior most officer running for the top post.

A 1972 batch IPS officer, Roy was state police chief for 11 months before being asked to step down in March last year after the Bombay High Court found his appointment to be in violation of rules.

Official sources said, Hassan Gafoor has been appointed as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner. (ANI)
