Chennai, Aug 31 (ANI): Hundreds of enthusiasts, including physically challenged participated in a marathon organised to create awareness about the underprivileged children in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

The marathon was organised by a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) 'Givelife'.

Speaking to the media, Member of Parliament M. Kanimozhi and one of the organizers of the event said that she was happy to see so many people turn out on the streets to support a noble cause.

"We definitely did not expect this kind of turn out and we are happy to see that the people have come together in such a big way to support Givelife charity. I would love to make two requests to people, please continue to support Givelife with same kind of enthusiasm and reach out to the children who really need the support that's the only way to change the nation," said Kanimozhi.

South Indian actor S. Surya who was also present on the occasion to boost the confidence of the runners echoed similar sentiments when he said, "I was always waiting for something like this to happen in Chennai and show other's that Chennai is rocking and we all care for Chennai. I still cannot believe that this is happening in Chennai and this is superb."

A total of 6,838 dollars each were allocated as the prize money in the Chennai Half Marathon for both men and women.

There were runners like Swathi who felt that one's mere presence was sufficient to show their support for the cause of development of underprivileged children in the state.

"This marathon is to tell the people that we want to educate Chennai right from the beginning and that is why we are here. Even if you are not running and say that you are here to support the cause suggests that you are supporting the cause," said Swathi.

Givelife, is Chennai-based NGO founded by Father Jegath Gaspar Raj fourteen months ago with two hundred and fifty students, which supports 13,600 underprivileged students throughout the State. (ANI)
