Patna, Jan 15 (ANI): With the aim of spreading awareness about the need to save the River Ganga from pollution, a meeting of the Bihar Cabinet was held aboard a floating restaurant on the river Ganga here on Thursday.

"The purpose for holding cabinet meeting on the River Ganga was that we should protect it, as it is related to our lives, and we should also pay attention to environment because planet earth is under danger. I would like to make everybody aware and do whatever I could," said Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

"It is high time that the society should pay attention to the environment," he added.

At least 200 persons, including ministers, bureaucrats and media persons participated in the proceedings of the cabinet meeting.

The Indian government has estimated that it will require an initial investment of four billion dollars for the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) to achieve its immediate objective of stopping discharge of untreated sewage and industrial effluent into the Ganga by 2020.

With one billion tonnes of waste being dumped into it everyday, the River Ganga, remains one of the most polluted rivers in the world. (ANI)
