India, Bangladesh ink five agreements

India and Bangladesh Monday signed five agreements including three mutual pacts relating to counter terrorism, organised crime and illicit drug trafficking. The two other agreements were inked pertaining to power sharing and cultural development.

On the first day of her maiden official visit to India after winning the last parliamentary election held on December 2008, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed met to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congree President Sonia Gandhi at New Delhi.

PM Hasina and her Indian counterpart Singh signed three crucial security mutual agreements for combating international terrorism, cross-border crime and illegal drug trafficking. India was facing some severe problems from the cross-border and was asking to its neighbour to support India in countering the illegal crimes, and terrorism.

The sweet relationship between India and Bangladesh was affected during the regime of previous PM Begum Khalida Zia. However, after coming in the power Hasina's government has handed over several rebellions to India who had fled away to the neighbouring country.

Dhaka has also assured to New Delhi to not to allow its soil to be used for any sort of havoc against India.

A power pact of 900 MW unit electricity has also been signed that would allow both the nation to share the power supply between the duo. India will allow Bangladesh to transmit the 250 MW electricity to its neighbour through Indian public sectors. This treat will enable the Indian companies to enter trans-nation in the power sector.

Moreover, in the credit line, India has also approved a debt of $1-billion to Bangladesh to support the country in reforming infrastructure, road transportation and railway infrastructure.

However, according to sources, some treaties are still going on under consideration and may get some turn soon e.g. the controversy of river waters' distribution.

The maritime border dispute is going under negotiations.

Some bilateral cultural treaties were also signed Monday, sources said.
