Supernatural thriller outrages families of tsunami victims

London, Aug 30 (ANI): Vinyan, a supernatural thriller based on the 2004 tsunami, has alarmed the families of some victims of the catastrophe and support groups.

The film, which stars Rufus Sewell and Emmanuelle Béart, tells the story of a Western couple who lose their son in the tsunami, which killed more than 225,000 people, but refuse to believe that he is dead, insisting instead that he has been kidnapped.

The movie, which is to have its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, has also raised concerns among several financiers and acting agencies and they have refused to get involved in the project.

"Anything which is resurrecting the memories of this tragedy should be treated with the utmost caution," Times Online quoted Steve Gill, co-chairman of Tsunami Support UK, as saying.

Liz and Alan Jones, who lost a daughter to the storm, said that to turn tragedy into entertainment so soon was outrageous, inappropriate and tasteless. Peter Carlton, Film4's senior commissioning editor and one of the producers, defended the project. He had at first thought it "the most tasteless thing I can think of", but now believed that the final film was challenging and important. (ANI)
