Tasmania urges men to help end state's sperm drought

Melbourne, Mon, 21 Dec 2009 ANI

Melbourne, Dec 21 (ANI): Tasmania's government has appealed the state's men to come forward and help the state's fast depleting sperm stock.

According to the Sunday Tasmanian, the state had only four sperm donors left and for the first time in the program's 35-year history women opting for In vitro fertilisation (IVF) will have to go on a waiting list.

Tasmania's IVF director Bill Watkins pointed out that the shortage was a result of a reduction in the number of donating males and more interstate women using up the state's supply.

And now the government has asked men to help.

"I would encourage males who are prepared to look at donating sperm to do exactly that because there are many couples in the community struggling to have a child," the Couriermail quoted Tasmania's Health Minister Lara Giddings, as saying. ANI)
