NHRC to probe Tehelka sting operation ??Operation Kalank?
Nov 06: National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has decided to probe into the indictments made in the programme “Operation Kalank”, a sting operation by Tehelka, aired on October 25, 2007 in which various accusations were made, pointing towards the failure and involvement of Gujarat government in the communal violence which has left the country bleeding.
The NHRC has also directed the Gujarat government to give its consent for CBI investigation into the matter.
The directives came after the commission viewed the tape and decided that the allegation made in the tape had various inferences and had raised vital constitutional issues.
However, the commission also mentioned that the authenticity of the tape should be examined independently by the commission as it will help to clear all the clouds if the allegation made are found to be unauthenticated and some suitable action has to be taken if the allegations made are found true.
The sting operation “Operation Kalank” by Tehelka showed Gujarat Minister accusing Modi for inciting them to do atrocities on minorities.
The sting operation created flutter with many of Modi’s supporter including people from his own party BJP, VHP and RSS alleged that the violence in Gujarat in 2002 was sanctioned by Chief Minister himself.

It has also filed petition in the Supreme Court to enforce the right of fair trial for all and transfer of nine serious cases outside Gujarat.
The commission said that this was done to infuse a sense of security in the people and encourage faith in the constitutional machinery.
