Pakistanis top UK visa rejection list

London, Sat, 12 Dec 2009 ANI

London, Dec. 12 (ANI): Pakistani citizens top the list of visa rejection by the UK, the BBC has reported.

According to British Home Office statistics, about 41 per cent of applications for family visitor visas from Pakistan were rejected in the last year.

Bangladeshis were the second least successful with a refusal rate of 31 per cent, however only 14 percent Indian visa applications were rejected by the British authorities.

Critics blame the Home Office of discrimination, but the British government has denied any such stance.

MP Sarah Teather said the government must look into as to why so many Pakistanis were being rejected visas by Britain.

"Why is it so high in comparison with other countries? Is this bad practice? It does look on the face of it as though it's blatant discrimination against Pakistanis. It's as if they've decided that all Pakistanis are going to overstay and as a consequence are refusing their visas," The Nation quoted Teather, as saying.

However, the Home Office has rejected accusations of discrimination and said it refused applications only when they were 'unsatisfactory.' (ANI)
