Nepali Congress to hold general convention

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Kathmandu, Aug 27 (ANI): The Central Working Committee (CWC) members of the Nepali Congress (NC) demanded that the party should call its 12th General Convention as soon as possible to reunite the party.

During the party CWC meeting, Nepali Congress member Binaya Dhoj Chan said, "Even after unification of the two parties including the Nepali Congress and the NC (Democratic), they have not been united emotionally."

"So all party members said an early general convention was the only way to unite the party and revive its deteriorating strength," he added.

During the meeting, Chand suggested that the party leadership start a new practice of assessing the performance of party members who were in government before giving them further responsibilities.

Talking about Maoists insincerity about implementation of past pacts and understandings, he said the party should address the problems of those who suffered at the hands of the Maoists and come up with a fresh program to exert pressure on the Maoist-led government for effective implementation of past agreements.

According to a report presented by party General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi at the meeting, altogether 603 Nepali Congress cadres were killed and 306 were injured by the Maoists during the insurgency.

The report further added that 1,379 party cadres were still with the Maoists, 2,986 family members have been internally displaced and the status of 157 persons abducted by the Maoists remains unknown.

According CWC member Dr Prakash Saran Mahat, most of the members called for strengthening the party units to control the anarchic activities of Maoist Young Communist League and the Maoist-led government in future.

Some leaders accused the party leadership for the party's defeat in the April 10 polls by becoming unnecessarily liberal toward the Maoists.

They have also suggested that the party form a high-level committee that will draft the party's visions on the issues of a new Constitution and federalism through state restructuring, Kantipur reported. (ANI)
