Nov 03: Geet Sethi settles for silver medal in the billiards singles
Grandmasters Krishnan Sasikiran and Koneru Humpy is on golden rush as they provided India with two more gold medals after claming the individual titles in the blitz chess competition of the Asian Indoor Games here on Friday.
This was Sasikiran’s third gold and Humpy’s second in the competition, which tenders nine categories of medals in chess. Five gold, silver and a bronze have so far pocketed by India in the chess competitions.
Thailand’s Prapr Chaithanasakun won the gold medal in men’s billiards singles forcing Sethi to settle for silver. Singapore’s Peter Gilchrist Edwa got the bronze.
India stands sixth in the medals tally with a total of eight gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. The tally includes the medals won by Geet Sethi and the men’s hockey team, which won bronze medal on Friday.
Sasikiran defeated Kazakhstan’s Murtas Kazhgalyev 3-0 in the men’s blitz section. He won it in the best-of-four final to claim the gold after the two players tied at 6.5 points following nine rounds of Swiss league.
While in the women’s section, Humpy scored an upset victory over former World champion Qatar’s Zhu Chen. She won the match in the sudden-death after they both were tied 2-2 in the final.
The Indian hockey team defeated Malaysia with a convincing margin of 7-4 to clinch bronze in the medal play-off match. Earlier, the team had lost 2-4 to Malaysia in the league stage.
China with 50 gold, 23 silver and 23 bronze medals leads the tally while Thailand’s (14-24-21) and Hong Kong (13-9-9).
