Nov 02: Criticised over the effort of tiger conservation and apparent revelation of a razor-sharp fall in the number of tigers the Indian government has finally listed some urgent measures to protect the endangered species. The creation of a tiger protection force is one of them.
There is a set of idea come up in the National Board of Wildlife meeting chaired by Prime Minister himself on Thursday. First is to set up a committee to look into every aspect of tiger conservation, second is the formation of tiger protection force to guard the number of tigers in various state, third is to make a senior police official to head the wildlife crime bureau.
As per the latest report there are only 1300 to 1500 tigers left in India in all the 23 major tiger reserves, which is not half of the previous census. Wildlife conservationists have pointed out Tiger poaching and the loss of natural habitats as the reasons of such dwindling number. Since then the administration has been observing various issues related to the conservation of the big cats and hence the meeting with prime minister.
The formation of a tiger protection force seems a better idea as the environment and forest ministry is going to recruit retired army personnel to guard tiger sanctuaries located in all parts of the country.
India is one of the few countries in the world where one can find tiger in such a number but recent statistics shows that due to various circumstances and also the negligence from government the country is facing criticism from environmentalist for being unable to check the fall in their number.
Wildlife activists blame illegal tiger poaching and increased urbanisation and as a result degradation of habitat and less stringent anti-poaching laws as some of the prime reasons. But it is interesting to see how these measures is going to bring changes in areas that have shown serious loses of wild tigers.
