Ferguson confident of Ferdinand's ability and experience to get him over rough patch

London, Oct 17(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reckons that defender Rio Ferdinand, who is experiencing a rough period after seven years at Old Trafford, will fight back his way to be one of the best for the club.

Ferdinand has not been performing to his usual high standards, as he has won just 60 per cent of his tackles in the season so far, compared to more than 84 per cent in the previous two campaigns.

He also had a vulnerable start to his international season with two high-profile blunders against Holland and Ukraine.

"I don't think he has had any spell like this since he joined the club, that's for sure. I think all players worry about their form if they're making mistakes and getting criticism. They have to. They wouldn't be human if they didn't. So, it's an unusual experience for him. But, he will get through it, I'm sure of that," The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

"We all go through little phases where we need to correct our game or take a step up. I'm sure he'll do that. I'm sure he has taken on board the criticism he has had and, with his ability and experience, he should be coping with that type of thing," he added.

Ferguson further highlighted that Ferdinand has played only 20 of the last 42 possible games for club and country, so he has hopes that some regular games will see Ferdinand regain the form that made him one of the world's top central defenders.

"Games will definitely help, there's no question about that. Maybe the point made about missing games is right. It takes a little bit away from you. But, that is the challenge now. He has played his two games for England and, if he gets into a run of matches, I'm sure the rhythm will come back," Ferguson said.

"I don't know if it's an over-confidence. I think there has always been a casual part of Rio's game since he was a kid. It's a casualness that has been an advantage to him at times. At other times, particularly in his younger days, it was a weakness. But, in his time with us, his development and maturity have brought about some outstanding form, consistently, for quite a long time," he added. (ANI)
