Oct 29: For the first time in the political history a high profile diplomat will appear today before the privileges committee of Lok Sabha. Ronen Sen an ambassador to the US has been summoned to appear before the committees to answer for his controversial remarks on parliamentarians, which he said, were directed on media persons and not on parliamentarians.

This is to be known that during the monsoon session of the parliament when a heated debate was going on the Indo-US nuclear deal, Ronen Sen allegedly commented on those opposing the deal calling them ‘ headless chickens’.

Such controversial comments on the parliamentarians were termed as damaging the dignity of the parliament and created uproar in both houses of the parliament to the extent that the minister of external affairs had to give clarifications regarding the phrase used by the Indian envoy to the US. He also read the apology offered by Ronen Sen immediately saying his comments were directed to journalists and not MPs but still if these hurt the feelings of parliamentarians he offers unconditional apology in the house.

Though Mr. Sen also tendered an unqualified apology, due to the huge protest by the parliamentarians, the speaker of Lok Sabha, Somnath Chatterjee referred the matter to the privileges committee of the house.

Ministry of External Affairs had requested to close the matter after Sen apologized in black and white. But the request was not heeded.

Congress MP Mr. V Kishorchandre Deo will head Lok Sabha committee. He will also have to appear before Rajya Sabha committee on November 2 nd as was decided in a meeting headed by deputy chairman Rahman some days ago.

Privileges committee consists of members from the ruling as well as the opposition party and everybody has the right to ask questions.

Questions and answers will be recorded and then the decision will be taken by the privileges committee.
