STORY: People residing in Silli Block in Ranchi district of India's eastern state of Jharkhand are perturbed after a 200 feet high hillock in Jumla mountains range caved in during the twilight hours on Wednesday (October 14).

The startled residents have now commenced worshipping the debris of the hillock with prayers no such catastrophe should ever take place.

The effect of the hillock crashing was such that the debris had spread over an area of one kilometre.

The Jumla range near Angara, is located about 25 kilometres from Ranchi and the locals term it as 'Mountain of Mountains'.

"It made a thundering noise at night when it (the rock) and we noticed it only during morning. We saw the whole rock and now we are praying that more of these Catastrophes," said Ram Singh Munda, a villager.

However, an expert geologist Nitish Priyadarshi who also happens to be a Fellow of Geological Society of India blamed the coal mining in the region for this catastrophe.

"What we can assume is that there is a danger of land subsidence as there are coal mines under the surface. Due to the topographical stress developed in the region, a mountain which must have highly weathered caved in and there is danger that other such hillocks in the region may not suffer the same fate," said Nitish Priyadarshi.

Such excessive and massive mining activities can also lead to earthquake, he noted.

Surveys of earthquake-affected areas reveal that apart from physical damages to terrain and man-made structures, the tremors also leave an adverse impact on the social psyche.
