STORY: Ahead of the Hindu festival of Deepavali, the festival of lights also known as Diwali, Chinese made idols of Hindu gods and goddesses fail to lure the customers as evident from the trends prevailing in Lucknow, the capital city of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Deepavali is being celebrated on Saturday (October 17) this year and it is an occasion when Hindus worship Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and Ganesha (god of wisdom and auspicious beginnings).

As such the traditionally made clay idols by Indian artisans have become the preferred choice of people of Lucknow.

Decorative lights, electronic items, crackers and religious symbols of Hindu gods and goddesses all made in China are cheaper than the Indian products. As such these products swamp the Indian markets during the festive season but somehow this time they seem to have lost the charm to lure prospective buyers.

There are a couple of reasons for the people not preferring items of Chinese make and the main aspect happens to be the synthetic material with which the idols are made since the idols after worship are usually immersed in water like the wells, ponds and rivers.

The synthetically made Chinese idols are not eco-friendly unlike the Indian idols, which are made from clay with a higher price tag.

Above all, the clay Hindu idols have a neat finish and have the right facial expression, observed Ravi Kumar, a seller of handicrafts and novelties.

"People who have faith in goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha say that clay idols are more superior than those brought in from China. People still offer prayers to the clay idols and later immerse them in the water bodies. The Chinese products may be cheap and attractive, but the clay idols are preferred more by the customers and are environment friendly unlike the Chinese ones of synthetic make," said Ravi Kumar, a seller of handicrafts and novelties, Lucknow.

Further he added to say that apart from idols made by local artisans, this time those brought in from India's eastern Kolkata are being liked the masses.

Veena Tandon, a buyer said that the Chinese idols could only be used as showpieces but not for performing festival and religious rituals.

"Even if one buys the Chinese idols, they cannot use it for the rituals that have to be performed on Diwali. One has to buy clay idols only which later have to be immersed in the water," said Veena Tandon, a housewife, Lucknow.

She also noted that she does not believe in the quality of the Chinese items.

Chinese made Ganesh and Lakshmi idols made from synthetic material, range from rupees 250 (around 5 US dollars) to rupees 600 (13 US dollars) as compared to Indian products of clay which cost from rupees 700 (15 US dollars) to rupees 2000 (43 US dollars).eepavali which falls in October-November, has its origins in the celebrations in Ayodhya in northern India marking the return of Hindu god Rama to his kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravana.

Also named Naraka Chaturdashi, as per Hindu mythology Deepavali is the day when Lord Vishnu vanquished Narakasura, a demon.
