Patna, Oct 8 (ANI): A fawn belonging to the rare species of antlers known as Manipuri deer was born at the Sanjay Gandhi Zoological Park in Patna.

This fawn belongs to the rare species of Cervus Eldi, the zoological name given to the Manipuri deer.

Indeed, the zoo authorities are quite excited with this new arrival.

"We are very happy after its arrival. It is completely healthy. Earlier, there were three male deer and two female deer in this park. But now one more has arrived. It is a rare species," said Parveen Kumar, Deputy Director, Sanjay Gandhi Zoological Park.

A large number of visitors were seen standing near the deer enclosure for a glimpse of the newborn fawn.

"It is the third time, I am visiting Patna Zoo and it's very nice. Every time, I used to see old deer. But it is for the first time that I am seeing a young and infant deer. I felt very good," said Santosh Kumar, a visitor.

The Manipur brow-antlered deer popularly known as Sangai, dwell in the marshy wetland of Manipur. Sangai is also the state animal of Manipur.

The lifecycle of Sangai ranges from 15 to 20 years.

Their habitat is located in the southern parts of the Loktak Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in eastern India. (ANI)
