Gaurur village (Bangalore), Oct 8 (ANI): Flood-hit people have started returning to their homes in Gaurur village, which falls in Karnataka's Gulbarga district.
Villagers came back only to see their washed away homes.
"I came back to the village only to discover that there is nothing left here. The house is damaged. There is no food," said Laxmi, a villager.
Their joy of coming back to their homes is overwhelmed by helplessness. They have to start their life from scratch.
"We stayed at the rehabilitation centre where there were no facilities. Now we come back to our village and here also nothing is left for us," said another villager.
On Wednesday, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa along with other legislators walked through various localities to mobilise funds for rehabilitation of the flood victims. housands of people gathered here to give money in cash as well as cheques.
Yeddyurappa said that people have whole-heartedly come forth and supported the cause.
"More than three lakh houses collapsed. People are supporting us. This is a very good cause. As a politician, for the sake of public, I am doing this," he said.
The lawmakers representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that each one of them would also contribute one million rupees for the rehabilitation of the flood victims.
The floods in northern parts of Karnataka, described by officials as the worst in many decades, has killed over 212 people besides rendering several thousands homeless.
Similar havoc was witnessed in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh after River Tungabhadra, which flows from Karnataka and joins River Krishna went in spate.
At least five million people are crammed in temporary government shelters.
Floodwaters have swamped millions of acres of farmland and damaged standing crops of sugarcane, maize, rice and wheat.
The loss of sugarcane has given rise to worries of sharp fall in the output of sugar in Karnataka, the country's third-biggest producer. (ANI)
