W Bengal govt-Mamata talks over Singur today

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Kolkata, Aug 20 (ANI): The West Bengal government and representatives of Opposition parties led by the Trinamool Congress will meet here this afternoon to hold discussion on the Singur impasse.

The talks are being held after State Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee invited the Trinamool Congress.

Last evening, the West Bengal government appealed to the Trinamool Congress and other Trinamool allies to postpone their proposed indefinite agitation over the Singur issue.

The agitation veers around Tata Motors project site in Singur demanding the return of 400 acres of land to the farmers.

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had accepted Bhattacharjee's invitation for talks to solve the impasse. However, she is sticking to her demand for the return of the 400 acres of land, acquired by the government, to their owners.

Meanwhile, after a Left Front meeting, its chairman Biman Bose said that the controversial 400 acres were in scattered fragments and not fit for farming anymore. He further called upon Mamata to take a realistic view of the situation in order to find a solution. (ANI)
