New Delhi, Fri, 25 Sep 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Sept 25 (ANI): A large number of people gathered at International Airport here with musical band and garlands to welcome Ramesh Kumar, who won India's first world championship men's wrestling medal in 32 years.

Kumar bagged a bronze in the 74kg freestyle category in Denmark to become the first Indian male world medallist since Vishambhar Singh's silver in 1967, the Wrestling Federation of India said in a statement on Thursday.

Kumar, who hails from Sonepat in Haryana, defeated Alexandr Burca of Moldova in the repechage round to secure bronze.

Kumar said that he was able to achieve this success with the help of support from people in the entire country.

"Countrymen supported me a lot. My coach who went with me also helped me a lot. I am really thankful to all the countrymen for their support. I would be looking forward to perform well in the Commonwealth Games and the London Olympic. We would certainly win a gold medal for India this time," said Kumar.

Kumar's success would definitely be seen as the revival of the sport.

India's wrestling sport have been steadily evolving as wrestlers have performed consistently in international meets and their hopes have been boosted after Sushil Kumar won a bronze at last year's Beijing Olympics. (ANI)
