Oct 24: A special Court in Dehradun has sentenced former UP Minister Amarmani Tripathi, his wife and two others in the Madhumita Shukla murder case on October 24th 2007.
Nearly 79 witnesses have appeared in the case, which was transferred to the Court of District and Sessions Judge V B Roy from Lucknow on the orders of the Supreme Court to Dehradun.
Amarmani Tripathi, was accused of murdering poetess Madhumita Shukla with whom he allegedly had an affair. The 24-year-old poetess was said to be killed on his pretext because she allegedly refused to abort her child.
She was found murdered in her Lucknow home on May 09, 2003 and later the case was handover to the CBI. Four of the five prime accused on CBI book are convicted but the court acquitted one of the alleged shooter named Prakash Pandey.
Other two including one relative of Amarmani Rohit Chaturvedi and Santosh Roy sentenced life-term for their involvement in the case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the convicts.
Tripathi was arrested by the CBI on September 21, 2003 after DNA test confirmed that the foetus matched with his DNA.
He is known to be associated with almost all the party which was in power and was a member of Congress (I), BJP, BSP and even SP. There are several other criminal cases pending against him.
Tripathi's wife Madhumani too was found guilty during the investigations led by CBI. Phone calls to Madhumita suggested her involvement in the case.
On May 9, 2003, Madhumita Shukla, a poetess was shot down from close range in her two-room apartment in Lucknow's Paper Mill Colony.
Amarmani along with his wife Madhumani, were lodged in Gorakhpur jail.
In the U.P. Assembly Elections, 2007, Amarmani won as an Independent candidate. He won the Lakshmipur Constituency seat in Gorakhpur District.
