Thane (Maharashtra), Sat, 05 Sep 2009 ANI

Thane (Maharashtra), Sep.5 (ANI): Normal life was badly affected due to heavy and incessant rains for nearly 10 hours Thane on the outskirts of Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

The heavy downpour commenced on Friday and continued till early morning hours on Saturday (Sep. 05).

In an incident due to heavy rains, a compound wall of a building in Thane collapsed on Saturday morning due to the rains killing one person and injuring another.

The group of labourers was passing by this compound wall when it crumbled and fell on them.

"It rained heavily last night. The wall, which fell, was eight to nine years old. The wall fell on a group of workers who were passing through that area. One person is dead and one suffered injuries. The injured have been admitted to Mulund General Hospital for further medical treatment," said Ravindra Patil, Investigation officer, Bombay Municipal Corporation.

The incessant rains resulted in the flooding of roads. At many places, people were forced to endure the overflowing drain waters entering their houses.

While the vehicular traffic literally came to a standstill, the trains ran much behind the scheduled time.

The suburban services on the Central Railway were badly hit and the regular commuters complained at the inordinate late running of trains.

"We are facing problems to travel from one place to another. It has been almost 20 minutes that I have been waiting for my scheduled train," lamented Mukul, a commuter on Central Railway's suburban services.

According to meteorological observatory, Thane recorded 95.5 mm rains between Friday night and Saturday morning. (ANI)
