Oct 19: Two explosions near her truck leave over 130 dead and several wounded

Benazir Bhutto escaped narrowly a bid on her life, which took the life of more than 130 people and left over 200 wounded. There was clamour everywhere in Karachi, 8 hours after she landed to her home land Pakistan.

Two explosions including a grenade blast and a suicide bombing exploded near a truck carrying Bhutto and her party.

Bhutto was not injured but looked stunned and soon after the blast she was taken to her family house in Karachi.

Earlier government official have urged Bhutto to use helicopter to reduce the risk of an attack from extremists supporting Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

She was aware that she could be targeted, but her undaunted attitude brought her here after her 8 years of exile.

She flew from Dubai to Pakistan to lead her part in January general elections, with tens of thousands of her supporter thronged across the country to give a warm welcome to their leader.

Bhutto came with a dream to free her country from deprivation of democracy, unemployment and freedom from militancy. With tear in her eyes and a smile of joy accompanied her when she landed her home soil.

On the Lal Masjid incident, she said praising Musharraf for taking tough line during Lal Masjid “I’m glad there was no cease-fire with the militants in the mosque because cease-fires simply embolden the militants".

She once told "There will be a backlash, but at some time we have to stop appeasing the militants”.

"We are still fighting a dictatorship," Bhutto, the former Prime Minister said on arrival. "We want to isolate extremists and build a better Pakistan."

It is believed that she had made enemies of Islamic militants by supporting U.S and negotiating a political alliance with president Musharraf.

Since no body has come forward to take the responsibility of the blast, Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari alleged Pakistani intelligence agency as behind the attack.

Musharraf condemned the blast and those responsible for this heinous crime will get "exemplary punishment" and has appealed for calm.

Gordon Johndroe, White House national security spokesman said "The United States condemns the violent attack in Pakistan and mourns the loss of innocent life there.”

John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia said "It is a reminder of the evil of Al-Qaeda”.

"It is a reminder of how important it is not to concede a victory to them in Iraq or in Afghanistan."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon censured the attack and said he "trusts that all political forces will act together to strengthen national unity."

The celebration has dampened by the pro-Taliban’s and Al-Qaeda group, but the spirit is still not faded. She will wade through this water full of whirlpools.
