Lakhimpur residents raise a stink over Lower Subansiri project

Lakhimpur, Aug 23 (ANI): Residents of Lakhimpur District in Assam are protesting against the construction of a dam over fears that their properties could be submerged.

The protests were staged as the Assam Government initiated construction of Lower Subansiri Hydel Power Project (LSHP) in the district.

Led by 'Akyamancha' (unified forum), the protesters said," We don't want dams. In the past years we have seen how the villagers have been hit due to damage caused to paddy fields, because of dams like the Ranganadi Project or the Karbi Langpi Project."

The construction work of LSHP is running behind the schedule due to the non-availability of environmental clearance from the Union Environment and Forest Ministry and border disputes between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

The contractor has completed nearly 30 per cent of the construction. The project is expected to be operational by 2012. (ANI)
