UK cops use 'Flying Saucer' CCTV camera at Derbyshire demonstration

London, Sun, 16 Aug 2009 ANI

London, August 16 (ANI): British police, for the first time, used a remote-controlled "flying saucer" at a demonstration in Codnor, Derbyshire.

Officials turned to the aerial cameras to monitor the BNP's Red, White and Blue festival witnessing anti-fascist protests.

The drone, based on military Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology, is supported by a camera and is operated using a hand-held control panel with two joysticks.

It feeds live images back to a screen on the control unit and was suggested to be a handy device in helping cops supervise public protests.

"A pilotless drone plane will be used to record evidence at the Red, White and Blue festival," the Telegraph quoted a Derbyshire Police spokeswoman as saying.

"The drone, fitted with CCTV cameras, will be used by a trained operator from the manufacturing company.

"It will record any incidents of disorder for evidence-gathering purposes. The drone is similar to a small, model aircraft," she added. (ANI)
